As a long time member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), I was honored to be asked to present 35 tips about business and life in an ongoing celebration of the Raleigh Chapter’s 35th year. I firmly believe in building relationships and reaching out for help when you need it. So, in developing this list, I contacted the fabulous women in my life for their input. The result is a blend of my tips and those of these wise women! You can learn more about the Raleigh Chapter at nawbo-raleigh.org.

  1. It’s all about relationships.
  2. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
  3. Make lists and prioritize, then, tackle the highest priority task on your list first.
  4. Measure twice…cut once. Mistakes cost time and money.
  5. Make your health and the health of your family a priority.
  6. Be present and in the moment. Give whoever you are with your full attention.
  7. When you make a mistake, address it head on. Develop a solution and move forward.
  8. Details, details, details. Pay attention to them to minimize problems on your project.
  9. Make smart decisions when it comes to the number of projects you take on at any given time. Just because it’s a good opportunity doesn’t mean it’s the right or best opportunity.
  10. Do something every day towards moving you closer to your greatest goal. You will be amazed at the progress you make when you are consistent in taking small steps.
  11. When negotiating, get the information; ask for what you want; and be “relentlessly pleasant”.
  12. Don’t be afraid to try something new for fear of failing. Not ever trying is the real failure.
  13. Give back. You will gain more than you give.
  14. The dumbest question is the question not asked.
  15. Never make assumptions. Question…do not assume.
  16. Don’t second-guess your abilities.
  17. If it isn’t going to matter in 10 years, then it isn’t worth worrying about now.
  18. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
  19. Go where you are CELEBRATED, not tolerated.
  20. Procrastination can be an ugly cloud that hovers over you. You’ll never regret preparing early.
  21. A great plan or idea is useless unless actually implemented.
  22. Learn the art of saying “no”.
  23. Life is too short for stress or drama. Select vendors, clients, and friends that make life pleasant.
  24. Be the expert in your field. Stay current and knowledgeable.
  25. No one can make you feel inferior unless you let them.
  26. When a friend stops by, all troubles fly away.
  27. Life without purpose is barren indeed.
  28. Make it a point to learn something new weekly-if not daily. It doesn’t have to be big, but keep learning. New skills open new doors.
  29. Do NOT stay in your comfort zone…except on Fridays.
  30. If you are not an expert on the matter at hand, find one and learn from them.
  31. It is OK to toot your own horn.
  32. Don’t hang in the shadows of a conversation and state your position last. Speak up and make your thoughts known.
  33. Don’t apologize for things outside of your control. It makes you look weak.
  34. When meeting people, smile, make eye contact, and use a firm handshake.
  35. Breathe!
